Utter Devastation

This past week I have been barely able to speak and certainly have been unable to blog. I've sat in front of our television, unable to tear myself away, barely doing anything but staring and crying.

The devastation that has hit our capital city, just some 20 - 25 minutes from my home is utterly unbelievable. In fact 75% of Queensland has been declared a disaster zone. Some of our smaller inland towns have all but been destroyed.

Part of the CBD of Brisbane. The entire CBD is a ghost town, completely shut down.

High rises and apartment buildings near the river.

Goodness knows how many cars and other vehicles have been lost.

This is how residents are getting around these days.

Our fresh food markets, completely under water.
Fresh food is having to be flown in from down south.

A raging inland tsunami hit the city of Toowoomba.
It was completly unexpected, caught everyone by surprise and took precious lives.

This is through the main st of the city. This city has a population of around 100 000 people.

Cars were smashed against the bridge like they were toys.

And piled up like they were filming some end of the world type movie.

Roads completely cut in two.

Some of our country towns were hit the hardest.

The water came so quickly that people didn't even have a chance to leave their homes safely.

To try and give you some idea of how widespread the devastation is, Katrina covered an area of 239 000 square kilometres. The queensland floods have covered an area of 1000000 square kilometres.

In rural and inland Queensland the task of trying to clean up begins, in Brisbane we are still waiting for the flood waters to recede.

It is very heartwarming to see so much support for people in need and especially from bloggers everywhere.

My parents witnessed a flood like this when I was only a baby and I never thought that I would ever see anything like it in my life time. I thankful everyday that all of our friends and family are safe high and dry.

Kylie,
I'm so sorry to hear of this. I'm glad you and your family are safe. I have a friend who is from Australia, who is currently living in my hometown in the states, and he has lost loved ones and friends from the flooding. It must be so unbelievable to see this happen to a place so close to your heart and home! Thoughts and prayers for all the victims!

This is just terrible, Kylie. I'm glad you and your family are safe, but what horrible destruction this is. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

My prayers are with you and your family and we're praying for all those who were affected. It must be so scary to live so close to that. We had horrible floods and landslides in Costa Rica two years ago, but nowhere as bad as this disaster.

I haven't seen some of those pictures. We live minutes from Grantham in the Lockyer Valley and it has been absolutely dreadful! Thankfully my family is safe. It is devastating and I constantly think of those who have lost so much...

Kylie, I am glad to hear that you and your family are safe, a friends father has just turned up wet but well, a sigh of relief there. I hope the water recedes soon so that the clean up can start, such a mess and such an awful thing to happen to so many families.

It has been incredibly surreal, hasn't it? We have seen photos of the suburb near us looking like a giant lake, yet we sit here a couple of km's away, high & dry. We are SO incredibly lucky that there was no damage or flooding for us. My husbands boss has been updating him daily on the situation near their warehouse.. it's unbelievable.

I plan to be volunteering this weekend, in the hopes that I can give someone nearby a hand helping put their home back together... or at least find it under all the mud. The Premier got it right though..Queenslanders (even us adopted ones!) are made of tough stuff, we don't back down, and we will pull ourselves up out of this. We will support each other in every way possible. Queensland will shine again!

Very glad you and your family are safe. Even though I don't know you personally, you're the only person I know from Australia, so you've been in our thoughts and prayers. It really is heartbreaking to see...

The scale of this flooding is frightening, even for those of us nowhere near. I can't imagine witnessing it. Like so many others we're keeping all that live in Queensland in our prayers.

WOW this so reminds of the devastation on American soil. I am praying for all of Australia during this horrific time. These are the first pictures I have seen as we (my husband and I) don't watch the news, just read about it on the web.

Thank you for taking the time to comment, it is still very unbelievable, even when it is on your back door.

For now though the long hard road begins....the clean up!!!

We went on a news fast for a while, so I only recently heard about this. We were forced out of our homes from a flood several years back, and these stories always hit me hard. I also remember watching after Katrina as the nearby city and so many of our friends suffered. Still, even being able to relate somewhat, I can't imagine this kind of widespread damage. I'm glad your family is safe, and my heart goes out to all of those affected by the flood.

Hi Kylie,

I'm so sorry to hear about the horrific flooding in your area. Just as we moved from Australia last May, my sister sent word that her house was destroyed in the flood that hit Nashville, Tennessee. My sister and her husband homeschool their three kids. She and her husband spent 12 hours carrying things from the first floor up to the second floor (photos, family heirlooms and that type of thing). And they spent a lot of time flinging their chickens out the second story window and up onto the roof of their house. Eventually they were forced to leave their house by canoe (as their house was an island by 2am) and left for higher ground. When they returned the waters had reached above the beds on the 2nd story--destroying most everything they owned... including the house itself. But they felt blessed as they survived as did most people they knew. And instead of looking at the loss, my sister and her family looked at the great joy in everything they *didn't* lose (for example, a picture of my Mom came through)... things like that. Her friends, school community (she's a professor) and church community pitched in to sort through their belongings, wash off mud and try to salvage as much as they could. They were thankful for the help and warm meals from the Red Cross. I hope you, your friends and those in your community come through this with resilience and resolve. With love and well wishes, Liesl

Our hearts go out to you and Australia! NBC briefly covered the flood this morning. I think news coverage here in the states has been rather limited. It is difficult to comprehend the devastation.
